Ahhh, the Hoya carnosa 'Tricolor' (aka Hoya carnosa 'Krimson Queen') — she's a real beauty 😍. This plant brings major personality with its waxy, variegated leaves in shades of green, creamy white, and pink. Sometimes the new growth is bubblegum pink and it's honestly a little magical.

Here’s your care guide to keep your Hoya Tricolor thriving:

🌞 Light

  • Bright, indirect light is ideal. It needs good light to keep that gorgeous variegation (and encourage blooms).

  • Can tolerate some direct morning sun, but avoid harsh afternoon rays—they’ll scorch the leaves.

  • Low light = slower growth and less color pop.

💧 Watering

  • Hoyas are semi-succulents, so they like to dry out between waterings.

  • Water when the soil is completely dry, or at least 75% dry.

  • In winter, water even less. They don’t like soggy feet!

Pro tip: Err on the side of underwatering—roots rot fast if they sit in moisture too long.

🌡️ Temperature & Humidity

  • Happy in 65–85°F (18–29°C).

  • Loves medium to high humidity (40%+). If the air is super dry, consider a humidifier or pebble tray.

  • Protect from cold drafts—it does not vibe with chill.

🌱 Soil

  • Needs a very well-draining soil mix. Use:

    • 1 part potting soil

    • 1 part perlite

    • 1 part orchid bark or coco coir

Basically, a chunky, airy mix that dries quickly.

🍴 Fertilizer

  • Feed monthly during spring/summer with a balanced houseplant fertilizer or one formulated for blooming plants.

  • Back off in fall and winter.

✂️ Pruning & Growth

  • Slow to moderate grower.

  • Prune to shape it or remove leggy vines.

  • If you want flowers, don’t cut the long spindly stems ("peduncles")—that’s where the blooms return year after year.

🌸 Blooms

  • With enough light and maturity (can take a couple of years), it will reward you with clusters of star-shaped, fragrant flowers—they almost look fake!

  • Flowers bloom on old growth, so again: don’t prune those flower stalks!

🌿 Propagation

  • Super easy via stem cuttings with at least 1–2 nodes.

  • Root in water, sphagnum moss, or soil.

  • Keep warm and humid for best results.

🐛 Pests & Problems

  • Relatively pest-resistant, but watch for mealybugs and spider mites.

  • Wrinkled leaves = underwatering

  • Yellowing = overwatering

Want to see yours thrive faster? Try placing it near an east-facing window and only water when it's thirsty. It’ll reward you with color, growth, and maybe someday—those dreamy flowers 🌸
