The Thanksgiving Cactus (Schlumbergera truncata) is a popular holiday cactus known for its vibrant, tubular flowers that bloom around late fall. With segmented, flat stems that have jagged edges, it’s often mistaken for the Christmas cactus. This hardy, low-maintenance plant makes a wonderful seasonal gift and a cheerful addition to any home.

Thanksgiving Cactus Care Tips:

1. Light:

Thrives in bright, indirect light. It can tolerate some direct sunlight but avoid harsh afternoon rays, as they may burn the leaves.

2. Soil:

Prefers a well-draining, slightly acidic potting mix. An ideal blend includes regular potting soil mixed with perlite or cactus mix to improve drainage.

3. Watering:

Water when the top inch of soil is dry. Water less frequently in fall to encourage blooms, and resume regular watering once flowers appear. Avoid letting the soil get soggy, as Thanksgiving Cacti are prone to root rot.

4. Humidity:

Prefers moderate humidity but tolerates normal indoor levels well. Consider occasional misting if the air is particularly dry.

5. Temperature:

Does well in temperatures between 60-70°F (16-21°C) during the day and slightly cooler at night. Cooler temperatures in the fall can help promote blooming.

6. Fertilization:

Feed with a balanced, diluted fertilizer every 4-6 weeks from spring through summer. Avoid fertilizing during fall and winter when the plant is preparing to bloom or is in bloom.

7. Bloom Encouragement:

For best blooms, reduce watering and place the cactus in a cooler area with shorter daylight hours in early fall to initiate the flowering cycle. After buds appear, return to normal watering and lighting conditions.
